File recovery from FAT16 partition under Windows ME?

G'day mates,

Had a bit of a panic today thinking I'd lost a few files. Me! The
one who's friggin' *paranoid* about backing up to the extent I've got
at least three copies of everything!

Anyway, in some senior moment I obviously "misplaced" them (finally
found them on an old backup CDR) and the worry is it may happen again
(probably more frequently as get more "senior" 8-).

So, the question is, what is a good program for recovering lost files
(i.e. deleted ones) on a FAT16 partition (NOT the boot partition) on a
system running Windows ME?

Recommendations and advice on reliable solutions very welcome. TIA.

Cheers, Phred.

There is still the File Recovery tool from PC Inspector

"PC INSPECTOR? File Recovery 4.x is freeware. By freeware* is meant
programs that can be obtained, used and distributed free of charge."

Recover4all is a fairly good program , the trial version will only recover
10Kb files .

I have used it and it's good and easy to use.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

Boy! That was a quick response! Thanks Gabriele.

It was just by chance; I went online shortly after you having sent your
message and knew the standard reply :-)

Makes a lot of sense to have a decent database of your backups.

I like Easy Recovery Pro. Not free tho.

Hi Phred,

Also give a try to this new product:

Roadkil's Undelete v1.2 from http://www.roadkil.net/undelete.html

Best Regards!!!
Giorgos.

One of the best features of this program, is the fact that it is a
standalone program, i.e. it will run from a floppy or flash drive.
How many people, not including the members of this group, would have a
file recovery program, installed on thier computer, waiting for D-Day?
If I understand what you mean:

For example, say the OS won't boot up. You need the boot disk to start
troubleshooting. How does Restoration help in this situation?

Hi Mike, no thats not what I mean.
Say you accidently delete some important files and you want to give
yourself the best chance of recovery.
Best case scenario, you have backups of all your important files, so they
can easily be recovered. Next best, you already have a file recovery
program installed on your computer, you run the program and recover your
files. Next best, you stop using your computer, find yourself a copy of
"Restoration" on a floppy or flash drive or downloaded from the net on
another computer, Then run this program from the removable media, without
installing it (standalone) and recover your files.
The worst thing you can do is to go searching the net for a solution, then
download and install a recovery program, as it will probably over write the
files that you wish to recover.
I hope this makes more sense to you? :)

Hi, :-)

If I understand right, you mean how undelete programs can help in case
you don't able to boot?
If you tried F8 boot options, Last Good Config, System Restore on Safe
Mode etc. then you need to restore your Disk-Partition, that you
previeusly saved on another Disk-Partition or at DVDs-CDs with disk
imaging software.
The most well known is Norton's Ghost (~90€). The only freeware I
know is Partition Saving.( http://www.partition-saving.com/ ).
Unfortunately although its powerfull, it demands some DOS experience.
If you want to test it, you can download FreeDOS (Open Source) from:
http://www.freedos.org/ or OpenDOS (free for home users) from:
ftp://esca.atomki.hu/pub/pc/dos/opendos/ .

Best Regards!
Giorgos. :-)

Rather strange user interface tho, tho quite usable.

Goes a bit mental at the end of a file copy, you cant close the status
popup, have to close the app instead. The file copy is fine tho.

Unusually allows the files to be saved across the lan which is handy
when there isnt much space on the system being recovered.
