Not with so little information, no. Can't possibly guess. This could be
hardware or software. Here's generic troubleshooting for software: 1)
scan with current antivirus using updated definitions; 2) remove
spyware with tools such as Spybot S&D (www.security.kolla.de) and/or
Ad-aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) - note that it is a good idea to do
virus and spyware scans in Safe Mode; 3) delete temporary and Temporary
Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary services/programs from running at
startup (see www.blackviper.com for a listing of services).

Generic tshooting for hardware: 1)start with a RAM test (I like Memtest)
and if that doesn't show anything, test the hard drive, check the power
supply, overheating, motherboard. This should get you started. If this
is not your cup of tea, then it's no shame to take the box into a good
local computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or BestBuy type store) and
have them vet it.

Good luck,

Malke

Mike,

You need to press "r" for 'retry', quite a few times.

Do a comprehensive test, rather than let it happen piecemeal. Put the
CD in the drive, exit from the autorun, then Start - Run and run
SFC /SCANNOW

Note that you may get in trouble if you have installed SP1 and then
deleted the folder Windows\ServicePackFiles which file protection will
be after to put things right. Whether you do it this way of let it
happen as you have been, you will be working back to a pre-SP1 state and
should end by running that again
