File Permissions question

I am trying to grant a child folder within a folder permissions to READ and
MODIFY but not EXECUTE. Every time that I choose MODIFY it automatically
chooses READ & EXECUTE. Is there a way to NOT EXECUTE. I'm thinking that one
needs to execute in order to modify. Am I correct?

"Modify" is a group of special permissions.
