Sometimes when backing up to a CD I get problems with file names/paths being
too long or invalid. Mostly they are files in my favorites folder that got
their long or illegal names from the page title field of the web site
concerned.

Is there a program or utility available that can be configured to scan
folders and sub folders for file names that can't be written to CDR and
automate the conversion/truncation process?

When this happens to me I zip it up using explorer, right
click send to compressed folder. it burns OK then and can
be accessed through explorer OK.

I've downloaded files that the author had no clue on how to name them
also. 200 characters, illegal characters, etc. I rename them.

Not that I'm aware of. BTW it's not a CDR problem, its a naming problem.

Yes I guess that works ok. I've got other backup S/W that would do something
similar.

If you use one of the decent third party burning programs (like Nero) it
will do that for you.
