File Number Limitation When Copying Over a Network?

Bruce

Hi,

In the last month, I've had to copy large media (music, pictures) folders
from desktop to laptop.

Once was for my daughter, to copy from my Dell desktop to her Dell
Inspiron 8600 laptop. Both are current machines, and both run XPHome,
SP2, and are kept fully updated. I installed NetBEUI on both, and
connected both to a hub. If I try to copy an entire folder containing
200 mp3s, the folder and only about 2/3 of the files are copies over to
the laptop, and Windows Explorer stops responding. A CTRL-ALT-DEL is
required to end task. If I select all 200 files within the folder, it
works fine. What I'd like to do is be able to copy over groups of
folders and subfolders, so I don't have to build the folder structure on
the laptop, but I haven't been able to do this.

Last night, I did the same thing for my daughter's friend. She needed to
copy files from her Dell desktop to her new Dell Inspiron 6000. Both run
XPHome, both have NetBEUI, and both were connected through a router this
time. I had the same problems with copying folders as I described above.

Here's something odd: I have successfully copied large groups of folders
containing subfolders, from my Win98 machine to my XPHome machine, using
the same methods (both are desktops, NetBEUI, over a hub). Why this
works, and the first two above didn't, I have no idea. Do you?

I plan to do a repartition and a fresh XPHome install on this machine, to
install a larger drive, but I first want to copy important folders/files
to another machine. If what I am experiencing when copying over a
network is 'normal', then I may think twice about this method, and copy
my important data to a slave drive, and then back to the newly
partitioned, new hard drive.

TIA,
Bruce

1. There is no reason to install NetBEUI. Uninstall it and use TCP/IP.

2. If any of the drives/partitioned are FAT32, you will run into the
32GB size limitation.

3. I find that copying files is sometimes problematic with Windows. Even
though it is more work in the short term to select fewer files for a
copy operation, the chances of success are higher.

I have had this problem occasionally - not numbers of file in my case
but it seems overall file size is the issue. 60% transfers then it
locks up - discovered shutting down everything possible when
transferring large files cures the problem but is not ideal as it
should happen in the background without problems.

If I use the FTP element of a remote control PC app to transfer large
files - works fine.

Hi, Malke,

If my hub (not router in this case) is also connected to my comcast cable
modem, is it safe to do file sharing/copying over TCP/IP?

Bruce

1. I would replace the hub with a router for more security. They are
inexpensive. If you have more than 8 computers on the lan, you can get
an additional switch to connect to the router.
2. Make sure you have firewalls running on all Windows machines.
Configure the firewalls to allow lan traffic as trusted.
3. Use strong passwords.

Well, for sure, there's NONE with NetBEUI! Worse than none - NetBEUI is a
malware MAGNET.

When scanners detect NetBEUI they shout: "Wake the kids, ma, we've hit the
motherlode!"

I *think* you are thinking of NetBIOS. NetBEUI is a non-routable
protocol that was used with older Windows operating systems. Because it
is non-routable, it was considered safer than TCP/IP. However, with
proper precautions TCP/IP is preferable.
