file needs to be opened by excel worksheet text converter

When i open any Word document i get the message;"This file needs to be opened
by the Microsoft Excel Worksheet text converter, which may pose a security
risk if the file you are opening is a malicious file. Choose Yes to open
this file only if you are sure it is from a trusted source".
Why is this happening and what can be done to correct the problem

This is what now occurs if you use the old Excel filter. It is a response to
the constant criticsim that Microsoft has paid scant regard to security in
the past. It is not a problem but a feature. The tighter the security you
impose the more it gets in the way of what you are trying to do. Using this
filter, I know of no way to eliminate the message. There are other ways of
connecting to Excel data files, but they have their own issues - see the
