file missing or corrupt on boot \windows\system32\config\system

Trying to fix a Win XP Home system that gives the error
message...

file missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system

This problem appeared after user downloaded and was
attempting to install automatic updates. Got this message
upon restart. Files were downloaded via modem and
probably got corrupted during download.

How do I fix this and get it back to booting?
