file ist issue in Windows XP (sp2) and Word

I have a group of workers that do legal documents. I created a network
share and moved their templates (workgroup templates) to a shared
folder on the network. They have been using this for some time on
their Windows 2000 Pro workstations running Office XP.

I recently upgraded their workstations from 2000 Pro to XP (clean
installs, formatted drives, etc.) And we upgraded their Office XP to
Office 2003.

Now when they try to access their templates (same network share as
before) it takes between 60 and 80 seconds before Word displays a
list. It does this everytime Word is closed and opened again. Once the
list is generated it only takes about 35 seconds to see the templates
list (still too long but more tolerable.)

There is no file sharing (i.e. more than one user trying to open a
template at the same time.) and I can open Explorer and navigate the
the shared folder and list files almost instantly.

Is this an issue with Word 2003 and XP? It ran so well under 2000 that
they want their old configurations back!

In the short term I have copied the workgroup templates to their local
drives (which works VERY fast again) but they can no longer contribute
to one another's templates (something they do regularly) and I now
have to create scripts to backup their changed templates and run extra
routines at night where the original way backed everything up nightly.

Any help is appreciated. I've tried the web resources I can find and
nothing even close to this has been found.

No, I don't have any problem opening the file from Windows Explorer.
What I have a problem with is building the list in MS Word 2003
(templates). It looks like Word is building a preview of all the files
in the Templates folder (and its sub folders) and there are mabe a
thousand of them.

I'm not sure what's causing it but when the users were on Windows 2000
Pro and Office XP this was VERY fast (as fast as using Windows
Explorer.) Now it is unacceptably slow.

Fran,

You could try using Filemon from one of your client systems, to see what's
causing the delay. It's a great tool to trace file activity / Access Denied
and other errors.

Filemon tool from Sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com

If not, you may try this in Office Newsgroups for more exposure.
