If I try to delete or rename several of the files, they say they're being
used by another person or program. However, there's only one user on the
computer. I'm not sure what kind of "using" another program might be doing.

I thought maybe it meant that some other file was getting data from that
one, but I don't think that's right because I'm sure I've had cases where if
I deleted a file that had the data some other file was referencing, it just
broke the formula but Excel would let me delete the file.

These are files I've made so I'm not real sure what kinds of formulas or
links etc there might be --- hoping someone knows some of the
tricks/tips/pitfalls.

Thanks,

Hi,

1. You may not be able to delete them if they were created by someone else
unless you have administrative rights. You might check with your IT
department, they should be able to help you.

2. Just to make sure, you aren't opening the files and then trying to
rename them while they are open?

3. If you have opened them and then closed them during the current session,
sometimes Excel doesn't release the memory as it should. To work around this
problem, restart windows, and before opening Excel try to delete or rename
the files.

4. If the file is a Shared file unshare it and try again.

If none of these work, please give us the exact error message.

If any of these help, please click the Yes button

Cheers,
