file format not valid

When opening a spreadsheet, message xxx.xls File Format
is not valid and spreadsheet will not open. If you go
into word and show all files and open the spreadsheet it
opens. How can I get it back to open in excel the way it
should be instead of word?

When you open it in Word does it prompt you to confirm
that it's an Excel file or does it open right up?

It sounds like someone (you???) save the excel file as a word document (even
though the extension is still .xls).

You might be able to save some data by opening in MSWord and copy|pasting into
excel, but I'd look for a backup.

Did you share the workbook with anyone--maybe email??
