file extensions

I`ve saved a document in My Documents from Word but when I send it as an attachment to an e-mail it can`t be opened and when I try to submit it to a Recruitment agency it says that it needs to be a .doc file attachment. Have tried saving it in a different format but all I get is a load of garbage. Can anyone shed any light on this problem please?

Send it to me and I will have a look at it. In the subject of the message,
insert the following code 30C770E8-151A-4417-962D as otherwise, I will not
open the attachment.
