File "~.exe"

Bob

The past week a file called "~.exe" keeps appearing in my
XP Windows folder and it attempts to access the Internet.
It does not appear in the registry. I have set my
firewall to block it and have actually deleted it several
times, but it gets re-created somehow. Does anyone know
what ~.exe is and what it does?

Try this, go your C: Drive > Documents & Settings > "Your UserName" > Local
Settings > Temp.

Make sure Show hidden files, is turned on before you do this.

Delete all contents both from the Temp and IE Cookies folder.

Download SpyBot Search & Destroy and AD-Aware, to cleanse your system.

What does you updated antivirus software say about it?

Bob;
This explains the resolution:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830921

Also if you installed the Critical Updates, one of the recent ones
resolves the issue.
Lastly Service Pack 2 will resolve it and is or will be available by
Automatic Update real soon:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Select "Automatic"

Hi M. - I don't think the OP was talking about the .wab glitch, it you'll
re-read his post. Sounds more like some sort of trojan/malware.

Thank you, Andre, Rick and Jupiter.

After executing Andre's advice I checked a little further
in my firewall. Turns out this .exe is part of my ISP's
customer support system which I reinstalled after moving
170 miles and changing corporate divisions. So my face is
pink, if not red.

Your help is much appreciated none the less. <:B~)
