file deletion very slow

For some reason, file deletion on my Win2k Pro box has
become *very* slow - I'm talking about 10 seconds to
delete a 1k text file from the desktop.

The computer is not networked, ScanDisk doesn't reveal any
problems, and the drive is not very fragmented. When I
delete via command prompt things get deleted right away
and the corresponding icon in an explorer window
consequently disappears as fast as it used to before the
problem. But deleting withing the gui context is slow.

Any ideas? thanks for the help, Kent

I think your OS hase a problem. The first you test by deleting this file
from Save Mode. If performance congress, you need to remove some program
resident on your system. Other, I think you need to repair Windows 2000 from
CDROM.

Thanks for the reponse. Your reply got me thinking so I
checked out the explorer.exe process in Task Mgr. and set
its priority from "normal" to "high". This has solved the
problem.
