Recently when I delete a file the "deleting" box pops up but the actual
deletion takes a minute or so. The size of the file is not a factor. Even a
deletion of an icon from the desktop takes forever.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Maybe recycle bin is just broken. Try to remove recycle bin folders from
all logical drives.

How do you remove the recycle bins?

How do you remove the recycle bins?

Delete folders named Recycler (on FAT16/32 partitions its name is
Recycled) with all content. Administrator privileges are necessary.

I think you are on to something - when I delete something without going to
the recycle bin the deletion is immediate. When I delete something into the
recycle bin that is when it takes a long time.

Question - Would the recycler folder be in the Windows area? Where might it
be?

Paste the following line into Start | Run, click OK and see what opens...

%systemdrive%\RECYCLER

Do you have Norton?
