Whenever I click on a directory that contains files with the mpg extension,
the file browser hangs and has to be shut down. I am trying to delete some
old mpg files and cannot do this.

Try doing it in Safe Mode..
Or Reboot and try getting to the files via command line only and deleting
them that way.

I picked up a solution in one of the other discussion groups. The problem
was with Data Execution Prevention (DEP) setting. Turned off DEP to not
protect Windows Explorer. Was now able to look at the directories that
contained mpg files as well as delete the unwanted mpg files. Restored DEP
to tlhe original settings and was still able view the directories with the
mpg files. Thanks for your suggestions.
