File associations

Hi
In my Windows 2000 SP4 installation, i associate certain files (by extension) with certain applications and they work fine. As in, when i double-click the file, the appropriate application opens up. But when I add a link to the file in web page and then click on it in Internet Explorer and select open, I get junk characters (which I suspect is the file openeing in text).
Can anyone help please?

What type of file is it ? If you right click the link and choos "Save
target as" it should download fine ?
