File and Settings Transfer Wizard FIX

Ok, I just used the wizard to back up my settings. Then reformated. When I
booted back into windows, I got the same error as everyone else that it
couldn't find my settings file, even thou it was right there. I went to the
windows update site and re-installed all the undates that I had the first
time. During this I noticed a patch in the Software, Optional talking about
this settings and file transfer wizard and 32 vs 64 bit systems. After
installing this update, like I had on my old setup, I was ABLE TO GET ME
SETTINGS TRANSFERED.

You just need to point it to the directory where the folder USMT2.UNC is.
Don't point it at the folder, just to the directory where that folder is
located. So for me it was F:\USMT2.UNC..... So I pointed it to the F:\
and it worked just fine. Hope this helps.

Also, microsoft gurus. You might look into this K#### patch which talks
about this and find out why it seems to make a difference. I kept seeing you
guys telling people how to run the wizard, even when everyone was saying they
were. Its all cause of that patch. Trust me, all I did was update all the
patches and I was able to do it.

Very much useful information, Rodeo.
BTW, can you tell us the name of the update? (Qnnnnnn)

I think he's talking about Optional Update KB896344. I have run into this
problem. Both computers have to have it installed or not installed. If one
has it and the other doesn't the transfer will fail.

BTW, the article talks about x64 Edition (transferring data from XP 32-bit
edition). I'm checking if there are any other F.A.S.T hotfixes.

Ya, the one Kerry listed is the one I was talking about. I had it installed
on my system before, then did the settings/files transfer to a network drive.
Reformatted and I ended up getting the same error everyone else did. When I
came here looking for answers, all I saw was the gurus replying back to
everyone with what looked like a form reply on how to run the settings/files
wizard.

Not wanting to loose my stuff, I just keeped installing windows updates one
at a time until it finally work. Turns out KB896344 has to either be on both
installs or not be on them.

Hopefully you guys can help others get past this when they come here asking
for help next time.

Take care... :)

As Rodeo says that is the update that causes the problem. It is not
comptible with previous versions of F.A.S.T. If you don't have it installed,
use F.A.S.T. to save your settings, format, reinstall Windows, then install
the update, then try to import the F.A.S.T. saved data it will fail. You
have to uninstall the update before the transfer will work. Same thing the
other way. If it is installed for the save then it must be installed for the
restore. It doesn't matter if you use 32 or 64 bit Windows although if you
have 64 bit Windows it must be installed so it would need to be installed on
the 32 bit system before starting the save.
