File and print sharing

I have two laptops running XP Home Addition that I am trying to network thru
a Belkin wireless router. One laptop is connected via an ethernet cable and
the other via wireless. I've run the home or small office wizard indicating
that I want to share files and printers but I'm unable to do so. I have
Norton 2006 Antivirus on one of the computers and I've allowed remote ports
137-139 on it. The other computer does not have a firewall other than the
Microsoft one. I can ping each with with IP addresses but I can't by using
computer names. I've also reset TCP/IP. Any help would be appreciated.

Upon further reading, I delected DhcpNodeType using the regedit tool. I also
turned unchecked NetlnkIpx and NwlnkNb on the Network Connection Properties.
This seemed to work because I could share files and printers, however; it
was only short lived. This morning I'm back to the same old problem.

George,

If you have IPX/SPX and NetBEUI ("NetlnkIpx and NwlnkNb"), AND TCP/IP, you need
to un install IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, not uncheck them.

I did as you suggested and it started working. I was able to share files
and I used the printer. After about 30 minutes of testing everything was
working properly. Afterward I installed a new software application on one of
the computers and had to restart it. Since the restart sharing will not work
again. I'm getting the same indications as before:

ping by IP: successful
ping by computer name: System Error 53 - The network path was not found
net view by IP: successful
net view by computer name: host not found

George,

Well, both Node Type Peer-Peer, and IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols, will cause
your problems. You need to recheck for those items.

When you install new software, you need to check what changes it's making. So
go back thru my articles, and check again. Then figure out why new software is
making changes.

Got it going this morning. Earlier in the day I had decided to go back to
scratch and restart the process. I had changed both computers back to node
type peer-peer. As I was retracing the set-up I forgot to change the node
type on one of the computers. Once I discovered the mistake and changed it
to broadcast it started working.

Thanks for you help. Since I'm a novice on networking I would never have
been able to get it going without assistance. I've got your website
