Figure references are inserting the graphics

I have 100+ frames in a document. Each frame contains a linked image
followed by a caption. This worked fine when I originally inserted the
images into the frames. However, if I change the style of the image to
anything (e.g., Normal, Body) or if I Clear Formatting, the image
"jumps" out of the frame (i.e., all that remains in the frame is my
caption). This happened to all 100+ images when I recently changed the
font used by my main Body style.

I need the images inside the frame so I can position the image and
caption on the page. I tried cutting/pasting the images back into the
frames (all 100) and they looked fine, until I updated the references.
Now the IMAGE also appears in the text when I reference the caption.
For example, rather than displaying "See Figure 8", it displays "See
<the entire image is displayed> Figure 8"! Yikes!

I've tried all sorts of things, but the graphic image keeps appearing
when I try to reference the caption.

When you create a cross-reference, Word inserts a bookmark around the
caption or label. When you reinserted your images, you probably got them
inside this bookmark. Ordinarily, the advice I would give is to be careful
not to press Enter at the beginning of a caption in order to insert a
figure; always press Enter at the end of the previous paragraph instead.

It's very difficult to get around this type of problem when you are trying
to use different styles inside a frame; as you have discovered, modifying
the style or applying a different one can result in losing the frame. I'm
wondering whether your document really needs to use frames. If the document
consists entirely of images and captions, you might be much better off
either leaving them inline or, if you need to have them side by side,
putting them in a borderless table.

Thanks. You are correct. The images are ending up "inside" the
caption. I found a time consuming way to correct each figure (create a
new frame, copy and paste the linked image into the frame, delete any
whitespace before the caption in the original frame, copy and paste the
caption into the new frame, and delete the old frame). But with so many
images/captions, I was faster to revert to a backup of my document and
redo the day's changes.

The document is a 300 page book that includes text and images (and lots
of other stuff), so I use frames to keep the captions and images
together. I believe I used frames and not text boxes, because the text
boxes were not updated when I F9'd the entire document.

Not only that, but Word can't "see" captions in text boxes (for purposes of
cross-references or a Table of Figures).
