Fields only display the code not the data!!

I am trying to insert page number etc in a footer. It inserts the field but
will not show the data only the code eg.{page}. If I toggle the field code it
will show the data but as soon as I go to Print preview it goes straight back
to the code again. This seems to happen with any field I create, like date,
author etc. I really need to know how to fix this as if I want to use merge
fields to create memos etc they won't print correctly.
help.....

On the Print tab of Tools | Options, clear the check box for "Field codes."

In the menu, check Tools - Options - Print, and see if "Field Codes" is
checked under "Include with document".
