Field formula error in Spanish

We want to display a page number that is 16 pages ahead of the "real" page
number. So, on my machine (all settings in English) I create the following
field:

{ = {page} + 16 }

This works flawlessly on my machine. But when I open this file on a machine
set to spanish, I get "Especificación de carácter no válida".

I can recreate this field perfectly using the pull-down
Insert-->Field-->Formula command , but still, I only get the error. If I
save it, after creating it on the spanish-language machine, then open it on
my english one, it works.

Note the {page} field works fine, just not the formula part, even when I
create the formula on the spanish machine with the pulldown menu. I have
tried varying the language setting for the document, to no avail. Thinking
the spanish-language machine might recognize the "=" form the keyboard
differently, I inserted it as a symbol, and even tried the ALT-ascii key
combo.

Any ideas?

Sometimes, Word is picky about the absence or presence of spaces in
field codes. Does it work if you try { = { PAGE } + 16 } instead? If
not, you may want to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see if
there is a bug (with either of these fields) specific to Spanish
versions of Word.

Note also (which you probably already know) that you cannot type
the field delimiters. You can create each pair of them by pressing
Ctrl+F9 (at least on English language systems) or by inserting the
formula field from the Field dialog box and then adding a PAGE field
inside the formula field via the Insert Page Number button on the
Header and Footer toolbar.
