field codes showing in new document

I have been experimenting with toggling between fields and the field code and
updating fields. I have a letter template with 'CreateDate' in it and now
when I open a new document based on my template it opens with the field code
showing and not the date. How can I get it back to showing the date? Many

Press Alt+F9.

If the field codes are also printing, do the following: On the Tools
menu, click Options. Click the Print tab. Clear the "Field codes"
option and click OK.
