FIC AN19c starts up, then dies

I wanted to install a copper HSF on my Athlon XP 3000+ to cool
it better than the old HSF was (54C idle/70C load). After an hour of
heavy 3D gaming, the system would sometimes freeze.
After installing the copper cooler, the system now powers on
for 2 sec., then all the fans, and drives power down, and the BIOS
gives a continious error code that sounds like a low pitched, Europeon
police siren. Does this sound like I destroyed my CPU?
I have tried reseating the power connections, and all, but it
doesn't help. Thanks.

Did you put the heatsink on the right way around?? That might cause that
(overheating siren)sound...

Have you got the CPU fan plugged into the correct header on the motherboard?

Yes. For some reason this new HSF just won't seat right. I
installed the old HSF, and it booted fine. I applied thermal paste in
a thin layer for those who will ask. I'm gona change the retaining
clamp on the copper cooler for the one on the old HSF. The one on the
copper cooler is one of those "slipping screwdriver of death" tabbed
clamps. Hopefully it will seat right then.
