Hi,
I downloaded SP2 and have had nothing but problems.
Luckily I backed up my entire hard drive before I did so.
Now I want to delete everything on my hard drive and re-install XP to a
clean drive.
I am having troubles and need some help.

I have created a win98 boot disk (as instructed) and tried to use the
"fdisk" function, however I get the following response:
Incorrect MS-DOS version.

I get the following response when I use the "ver" command at the prompt:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2006].

This has got me frustrated.
All I want to do is erase everything on my hard drive and re-install XP.

If futher "illumination" is needed let me know.
Thanks,
gv

Load your XP CD and follow instructions. You may have to change BIOS to 'boot'
from the CD.

Boot up using the XP CD and create a new partition/format during the
install.

.
the easiest way to do this...
set your BIOS to 1st boot from cd-rom
put the XP disc in and delete/reformat/reinstall

I'm not sure but are you saying that you've booted off a
win98 boot disk and it claims to be XP? If so, your
procedure for making the boot disk was wrong. Then
again, you never actually said you booted off that disk
so I'm not sure. Just sticking it in a drive isn't
enough.

FDisk is an old MS-DOS utility that is neither available or needed
in WinXP.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

To answer your question. W98 boot disk.
fdisk > y > y > pick number 3 = delete non dos partition.
be sure to know what your volume label is.

It would be better to use the bootable floppy from your
HDD mfg to write zero's to the HDD.
I would then use a slipstreamed XP-SP2 disk to install.
Have all of the latest drivers for your chipset and other
hardware.

Another item of importance is if one has a proprietary
(compaq etal preinstalled system) this will open another
can of worms.

good luck

Grin.

W2K is NT 5.0
XP orginal is NT 5.1

Hi,
I'm assuming you have a retail Microsoft XP or OEM CD and not a restore CD
for proprietary machines, and only one OS installed.
If you have the ability in your BIOS to set the machine to boot from CD then
what you want to do can be done very easily just using the CD. Just follow
the below instructions:

To format drive C and clean reinstall Windows XP with the XP CD assuming
only one OS is installed:
a. Place XP CD in CD-ROM drive and prevent auto start by holding down
shift key.
b. Select Start\shutdown\restart.
c. The manner in which the CD boots can be different. Usually you will
be asked to press any key to boot.
d. CD boots and installs various files then asks if you want to
install or recover. press R to recover.
e. In recovery console type 1 and press enter. (This represents the
single OS installed)
f. You will now be required to enter the administrative password, the
password you originally entered when first installing XP, and
press enter.
g. Now type "format_c:_/fs:ntfs" without Quotes and press enter. Note:
_ = Space. If fat32 was desired replace ntfs with fat32.
h. Press Y, when asked if your sure, and press enter (to allow
format).
i. After format type exit to quit recovery console and auto restart
computer.
j. Boot again from CD and select install. Follow prompts to install
OS.
k. Do not select to reboot from CD during the several restarts during
install.

That should do it. Happy installing.
