Hi, John.
Methinks you are trying to mix apples and oranges. :>(
How many hard disks do you have? How are they partitioned and formatted?
What Windows versions are installed, and on which partitions? Which Windows
came preinstalled on your computer? And, most important, what do you really
want to do?
If you really want to reformat Drive C: as FAT32, simply boot from your
MS-DOS startup disk. If you want to repartition your HD, run FDISK from
there. Then run Format.com to reformat Drive C:. Then install Win98 on
Drive C:. None of this is different from the way we've always done these
jobs. If this is all you want to do, then your question does not belong in
the WinXP newsgroup.
Or, boot from your WinXP CD-ROM and accept its offer to repartition and/or
reformat Drive C:, then abort Setup before it installs WinXP. Then
reinstall Win98 from its CD-ROM.
But, if you are dual-booting Win98 and WinXP and want to continue to run
WinXP, you probably won't like the results. Reformatting C: will wipe out
the WinXP boot sector and "system files"; you will then need to boot from
the WinXP CD-ROM and use the Recovery Console to run Fixboot and Bootcfg to
rebuild the system files, including C:\boot.ini.
I'm still unsure where you are and where you want to end up, so it might be
best if you post back with more details before going ahead with what I've
suggested. Proceed with caution.
