Faxing with no 1

XP fax insists automatically puts a country code (1 for US) in front of
long distance numbers. I need to turn this off because my long
disrtance service automatically does this. That is, my faxes need to go

(215)555-1212 and not

1(215)555-1212

But XP doesn't seem to give you the option of send a long distance fax
without using a country code. Is there some was to do this?

Go to the Control Panel.

Go to Phone & Modem Options. (In Classic View)

Select your current "Location"

Click on the "Edit" button.

Go to the "Area Code Rules" tab.

Create a new one or edit an existing one.

You can then choose to have it dial 1 or not at the beginning for an
area code that you specify.

This doesn't solve the problem. First, I would have to go set up a rule
for every single area code that I might dial. There are hundreds of
area codes that I might fax. It isn't practical. Second, there are 2
area codes that include numbers that can be either local calls or long
distance alls depending on exact location. Sometimes I need a 1 and
sometimes not with the same area code.

I tried a test with one area code and didn't check the 1 box. It
doesn't dial properly. It apparent ignores the access code that I need
to make long distance calls - even thoug I entered it in the general
rules tab. This is automation run amok. The stupid program gives you no
way to simply enter the numbers directly. This is a terrible, terrible
design.

I give up. Can anyone recommend a good freware fax program?

I believe even another third party fax program will need to use
Windows' dialing rules.

Sure...why not. If the routine has already been programmed
by someone else, then might as well use it. It is the same
as using a tool, such as a hammer, already made by someone
else.

What you need to do is to turn off all the dialing rules and put the entire
7 or 10 digit phone number in the dialing to box. This will not dial the 1.
I use it all the time this way since I may have to dial a 1 for long
distance in area code 410 for some numbers and other times I don't need to
dial 1 to dial a different number in the same area code.

Pardon me, I actually meant to say 7(without area code), 10 (with area code
but not long distance) or 11 digit number (11 would include the 1 if long
distance is needed).

Great. This means that I have to dial 20 digits by hand for every fax:
10 digit access code and 10 digit long distance.
