FAX with USRobotics 56K Sportster ISA modem?

T

Timothy Daniels

I have an old Dell desktop with an internal USRobotics
Sportster 56K FAX/Data ISA modem, model 0484. When I
upgraded the Win98 OS to Windows XP, the FAX feature
stopped working, although the ISP dial-up function remained
functional. When I choose the FAX function in Word's Print
dialog box, the job just queues up without anything being faxed.
Is there any way to restore the outgoing FAX function? I want
to keep the ISA modem because there are no more PCI slots
available.

If this modem is in the HCL, there may be a chance. If not, it's a
crapshoot...

It's not listed. But since the modem works as a data modem,
doesn't that imply that there is a driver in WinXP that is
compatible with the modem? (I didn't have to supply a modem
driver when I upgraded from Win98). Is the driver for the FAX
capability usually a separate item, or do both the data and FAX
functions use the same driver? If it's the latter, maybe all I need
is FAXing software. What do you think?

The problem is entirely with XP Fax; new drivers may help, but there are no
guarantees. XP Fax has issues with MANY devices it really should work fine
with. If you need to rely on Faxing, third party software is pretty much a
requisite at this point.

3rd party FAX software is entirely acceptable to me, but
I can't afford to pay for something like WinFAX. All that I
really need is something to send out single FAXes. I don't
need FAX receiving, FAX broadcasting, delayed FAXing,
multiple cover sheets, contact lists, voice email, etc. Do
you know of any bare bones minimalist FAX software?

I got the FAX function working now. I used the FAX
console to configure the app to use the USRobotics
modem, i.e. ControlPanel/Printers&FAXes/FAX/Tools/
Configure FAX. In the Setup Wizard, Select FAX Device.
I could then send out a FAX from my PC to my standalone
FAX machine. Thanks for your indulgence.
