Fax Console: Windows XP

I'm hoping someone else has experienced this one. I've searched the forum,
but haven't discovered the same problem.

I "had" fax console working just fine on my HP desktop with XP Home, for
well over a year. Then the other day, it locked up on me. Haven't loaded
anything new lately, but tried a restore to about a week earlier, with no
luck. It's given me several clues. "Printer server" could not be found. It
asked me to load a driver (tried that, no luck). I even went into
"Add/Remove" programs, then Windows Components, and removed the "fax
console". It asked me to restart, then I went back in and "added" fax
console. Everything seemed fine. I then went to "Printers and faxes" and
chose "setup faxing" in the right hand pane. It started to go through it's
processes (I even watched the "Fax" icon appear under the list of printers,
and then disappear!) and halfway through, it just stopped and disappeared. I
can't seemed to find anything on Microsoft's website. Can anyone offer
suggestions?

Please try normal virus, trojan, adware, and spyware, et cetera tools.

Like Lavasoft AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy (Spybot S&D); both free and
very good, clam AV is good also but is an "overnighter".
