How do I go about placing the favorites in alphabetic order?

Try this....works for me.

click the Favorites in the tool bar
In the drop down right click and select Sort by Name

How do I go about placing the favorites in alphabetic order?

Open Favorites from the menu item, not the toolbar icon. Then right click
any of them and choose Sort by Name.

If you want them to automatically alpha-sort even as new entries are added,
you need a registry edit. Navigate to:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Menu
Order\Favorites

and delete the value named 'Order'. Also delete this value for any
subfolders. Then, with the favorite key highlited, click on Edit >
Permissions and deny 'Full Access' to Administrators, yourself, etc. This
will prevent the key from being automatically recreated.
