A day without help on another thread, so starting again...

On a Dell 8400 XP SP2 the Event Viewer shows "The driver
detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\D" This is
a 145GB drive with about 29GBg free. RAM 2GB.

I've looked at various MSKB articles, including 330909,
331958 and 303013.

Gerry Cornell told me SP2 includes 330909, so I've
discounted that as a fix.

30313 points to 331958 and both describe a problem with a
drive larger than 137GB. 331958 recommends downloading
Q331958_WXR_SP2_X86_ENU.exe to fix SP1's not using 48-bit
LBA when writing ... hibernation files.

Can anyone tell me whether SP2 includes 331958?

If so, what do I look at next?

Dave, I don't know the answer to your problem but Event Viewer is talking
about a controller error. Is the right cable being used for the drive (80
wire, not 40 wire)? Is it secure and in good shape? Are there motherboard
updates from Dell for your system?

NOTE: You have XP SP2 so you should have all the needed bits for drives
greater than 137GB. File version for atapi.sys in SP2 is 5.1.2600.2180
which is newer than the one discussed in the MSKB articles you mention.

Fast User Switching is known to have problems with some configurations and
drivers. Try disabling it to see if the error continues.

On-line homework carried as far as I can manage... Problem
taken to Dell tech support by phone. Many diagnostics run
without error. IDE driver replaced. Fast user switch problem
disappeared. Hibernate error continues. They've promised to
call back with an answer. Thank you very much for the response.

Not great news but at least some progress. Hibernate can be fussy about
drivers as well. Hope this continues in the right direction for you and
eventually gets fixed.
