False password returned in DUN redial

Unfortunately I have to use DUN when my cable is out. I like to remain
connected 24/7, so I have a problem with the Win XP Pro autoredial.

For Win XP to redial a lost connection, the username & password for an
account is entered in Internet Options/Connections/Dialup and VPN settings -
Settings/Dialup Settings.

I have short passwords of only 7 characters for two different DUN accounts.
After entering my User name and Password and clicking OK, if I go back to
the settings my 7 character password is now a 16 asterisk long string. The
same occurs for either of the two DUN accounts. And whenever Win XP redials
a dropped connection, an Invalid Username/Password error is always returned.
Needless to say, no connection is made.

Anybody know how to repair this?

Thanks.

Jeff;
There is nothing wrong to fix.
That is a security feature to mask the actual # of characters in the
password.
Of course now we all know your password is 7 characters long...any
other clues?
Just proceed as if all is OK...which it is.

Then there is some other reason why I'm getting an invalid username/password
message whenever the auto redialer tries to reconnect a dropped connection.
I've entered and reentered the username/password so many times that there is
no doubt that the information which I've entered contains no errors.

I should have mentioned that I've already tried making a new DUN connectoid
but the problem remained. And I scan my system at least twice a week with
Norton AV 2004 and once a week with Spybot R&D and AD-Aware.

I wish the problem were as simple as just editing a registry value. I
haven't a clue at present as to which keys would be involved.
