I have a weird internet connection problem with one of
three computers on a wireless network. I am using a D-
Link 614+ wireless router (connected to a cable modem) to
which my home office computer (running Win XP
Professional) is connected by cable. Two other computers
upstairs (running XP Home) use D-Link 520 wireless
cards. One of the upstairs computers connects
flawlessly. The other reports that it is connected, with
excellent signal strength, but running Internet Explorer
results in a "The page cannot be displayed" error
message. However, if I click on my wireless connection
icon, then on "Open wireless connections/change settings
for this connection", and change any setting other than
the internet protocol (I usually change the QoS packet
setting) to off if it is on, or on if it is off (it makes
no difference), then I get a brief no connection message
followed by an excellent connection message, and Internet
Explorer finds the internet immediately and displays my
home page (Comcast.net) with no further problem.
However, if I turn the computer off and then on, I have
to repeat the whole exercise, and sometimes just leaving
the computer idling for a couple of hours loses the
connection, too.
To compound the problem, when I installed XP SP2, none of
the above changes worked, and I couldn't get on the net
at all, despite my excellent signal strength connection.
I uninstalled SP2, and the above changes once more worked.
