Failed update and more

Menno Hershberger

This might be more of a Windows Update problem, but three of these entries
in my event log look suspicious to me and may be spyware related.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with
error 0x80070643: Definition Update 1.14.1408.8 for BETA Windows Defender
(KB915597).
-----------------------------------
I noticed my machine had rebooted this morning and I DO NOT WANT it
rebooting in the middle of the night. I had my automatic update settings to
download the updates and let me decide when to install them. However this
setting had changed itself back to "automatic".
"SideBySide" sounds suspicious. I Googled for that and Symantec listed
adware with that name. I searched my drive for sidebyside and sigstub.exe
and found nothing. I DO have an H drive but certainly no folder by the name
of "bf2b2b8ddf40ddbb6b305baa0eb447c8"
Windows Defender, AdAware, and Spybot Search & Destroy all came up clean as
they usually always do.
Does SideBySide mean anything to anybody?

Ran into the same problem. I believe Microsoft.VC80.CRT.dll comes with
Visual Studio 2005, which I don't have installed on this computer. On
another computer latest definitions installed just fine. I do have
Visual Studio 2005 installed on that other pc. This seems like a
broken dependency introduced in the latest update.
