Failed SP2 install- database error?

I am attempting to install SP2 update; it is fully
downloaded, but only gets about 40% through installation.
Installer initializes ok, it backs up files and backs up
registry, but when it gets to "Creating Restore Point",
either during or immediately after, an error message pops
up that says "Unable to read from or write to database"
and the update fails.
