"F-prot antivirus update monitor" is running in msconfig services. What is
it? Is it required?
I do manual updates daily.

Thanks

it is a component that checks to see if there are any program or
signature updates available...
Is it required?

that's a tricky question... it depends on where you draw the line
between what is needed and what is simply nice to have...

signatures updates only or signature and program updates?

It also provides status information to the Windows Security Center
component of Windows XP service pack 2.

If you disable it under Win XP SP2 the Windows Security Center won't
be able recognize that F-Prot is installed and up to date.

If he's running the F-Prot Updater that'll tell him when new program
version are available.

Well it keeps coming back even when I disable it in services. So I guess it
will just keep on ticking:)
