I backed up my laptop with the File and Settings Wizard and then rebuilt the
system. When I try to resotre my files the wizard says:

"An error occured while the wizard was loading your data.
The wizard cannot create the data needed to save your settings. Make sure
you have enough disk space available."

I have 28 gigs of free drive space. I went through Microsoft Paid support
with two techs who did not know what to do.

I tried to use the FASTconv tool but do not know how to get it to extract
the files.

Does anyone know another option or data recovery service that I could use?

"The approximate total space that FSTW requires (in temporary area and on
the destination drive), is approximately 4 times the size of the store that
is used."

I checked the disk space and there is more than 4 times the space on my drive.

I tried to use the fastconv tool but the documentation is unclear how to
extract the files. When I ran the verify option I get an error at
0000007c.dat and excluded it on the next verify which seems to finish but I
don't understand how to extract the files once I use the exclude switch. I
used the K switch but it leaves .dat files which I do not know how to extract
the files from these either.

Any thoughts?

I haven't used fastconv but from the instructions you need to use the
following switches...

/i (files to include)
/e (files to exlude i.e., 000007c.dat)
/s (source store i.e, where ever the store is located on the hard drive)
/d (destination store i.e., where they are extracted to)
/t (a valid temp folder - you can delete these later)
/k (just for good measure :)

So you're command would look something like...

fastconv /i 000006b.dat 000006c.dat 000007b.dat /e 000007c.dat /s
c:\temp\fast /d c:\temp\fast\extract /t c:\temp\fast\temp /k

If only the first file is converted then you might try separating files with
a comma as 000006b.dat, 000006c.dat, 000007b.dat and/or remove all spaces
between the switch and the assignment.

Since /k prevents the files being deleted from the /t designated directory
you'll need to delete them later

Also, fastconv won't create any directories so what you designate needs to
exist.

Before playing with this make a backup copy of the entire store :)

let me know how it turns out...

I tried what you sugested and entered the following:
fastconv /i:00000001.dat e/:0000007c.dat s/ c:\fast\USMT2.unc /d
c:\fast\extract /t c:\fast\temp /k

The program ran for about an hour and at the end I got the message:
Cannot load transport database. TRANSDB.dat might be corrupt. Error: 3

Any other thoughts?

Jon,

I tried the thinks in the article but when I run the wizard it does not give
me a temp direcotry so that solution will not work. I tried calling some
data recovery services but had no luck... in fact one guy told me I would
have a better chance of recovering files from the computer that I rebuilt
than getting them out of the archive.

Any other thoughs about another direction?

Thanks,
