I want to format and do a fresh install on my Dell Dimension
some-number-or-other. Now--is there a way to extract or install ONLY Windows
from the Dell recovery disc, or do I have to suck up the bloatware and then
track it down and kill it? Alsok if somebody could direct me to simple
instructions for creating a slipstream disc of Windows Updates I would
appreciate it.
Thanks!

Nope.

Yep.

Google Autostreamer, although it probably won't work for your piss poor
excuse for an OS that Dell gave you.

Can't do any of what you want to do with the Dell recovery disc.

Doesn't Dell provide an I386 folder with instructions on how to make a Windows disk?

Well--crap.
OK, then--howzabout creating an "install" disk of downloaded updates, so as
not to sit through a month of Sundays babysitting downloads after the fresh
install? I'm pretty sure I've seen reference to that someplace, but I'm
having trouble finding it.

It seems you may wind up doing it the hard way. If you don't have a
true Windows XP CD (or close approximation) then N-Lite or Autostreamer
are useless.

Still no matter how much work it is, no matter how long it takes you and
what suggestions us use to de-crapify the system and load updates or
whatever... I suggest you look into some way to then image the hard
drive with that virgin clean OS. If it takes you a day to get that
machine where you like it, compare that to a restore from an image
taking less than 30 minutes. Think about the payoff.

The Dell Windows disks that I have gotten with every Dell I own, and most that I repair, is a OEM
Windows Installation disk that installs a clean XP on Dell computers. The drivers and crapware are
on separate disks.

Wow!
Now that's a rather extreme reaction to a suggestion to a newsgroup.
You get so upset over something as little as that so you feel the need to resort to
insults & name calling,?
Are you some sort of Net Nanny or something?
Chill out!
