Extra Space With Buttons

I found a spreadsheet with an extra column to the left of the row numbers.
It has two buttons at the top, numbered 1 & 2. Nothing happens when I click
on them. What is the functionality supposed to be? How can I create it on
another spreadsheet, (or remove it from this one)?
