extra Lan connection in system tray " aquiring IP.."

I have DSL connectted by PPPoE - internet is available. However, I cannot
access my gateway Versalink (Westell 327W) to change settings. The DSLmodem
is connected directly to the computer (no router involved). Like the subject
says, I have and extra LAn connection icon the system tray "aquiring IP
address" along with my connected LAN icon. Is this an XP issue or a NIC
issue? I have only one NIC installed (Netgear FA 311).

A little history: this setup has worked well for the last 6 months, then
last week the connection became very slow and then stopped. I attempted to
re-install, power cycled the modem, reste modem, etc and am at my current
situation. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

There are two network connections associated with your DSL service:

1. The PPPoE (Broadband) connection gets an IP address from your DSL
service provider. This is a logical, not physical connection, and
there's no NIC associated with it.

2. The Local Area Network (FA 311) connection connects physically to
the DSL modem, but it doesn't get (or need) an IP address. To avoid
messages about it acquiring or failing to get an IP address, assign it
a private static IP address, such as 172.16.0.1.

The modem address is just 192.168.100.1, no "http://", if it is
addressable like most modems. You should get at least a page with no
signal data if users are locked out.

What are the properties of the phantom connection? FWIW, I have one XP
computer that after the latest round of Windows Updates generated a
similar phantom connection icon along with a failure of the taskbar icon
display properties (show/hide, etc). This was solved by using the
taskbar fix routine at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
