External USB2 300Gb Seagate hard drive needs short filenames?

have a recent Seagate external 300Gb USB2 / Firewire hard drive, works
ok on original XP-SP2 PC, though wont take files >~4Gb due to FAT32 or
something, but it takes the long XP filenames ok,

Then moved it to a 2nd (older) XP-SP2 PC with an add-on PCI USB2 card,
and the drive is recognized, though format is shown as 'RAW' in
properties, but long file names of files on the drive are shown ok, but
if I try to copy a file with a long file name from the 2nd PC to the
external drive, it says the drive does not support long file names, and
automatically truncates the name to the DOS 8.3 format.

Do I need to load a Seagate device driver for this drive to recognize
long filenames on the 2nd PC? I havent yet used the install CD that
came with the drive assuming it only is useful if one wants to use the
backup app, which I dont.

Why did the long file names work on the 1st PC? Is there some
discrepancy in the USB2 implementation of the 2 PCs?

Yep, FAT32.

That's the problem.

Nope, the problem is with the USB drivers, not the hard drive.

Because its USB is setup properly.

Yep. Likely you've got drivers intended for a camera
installed on the older PC. RAW files are used with those.
