External USB drive was working, now it's not. But it works on oth

I had a USB 2 external drive (80G) working fine, I removed it from the
system, put another in (20G), copied some files & tried to put the original
back & it is not recognozed (sorry for the run-on sentance). I tried to put
either of the drives back on the system & neither were recognized. I took
them to another system & the drives work fine. It's acting like I clicked
the icon to "safley remove USB device", that icon appears when I plug in the
USB drives, but I can not access the drives. I did reset the computer with
similar results.

How important is it to not "Hot swap" these USB drives & to click the icon
to safley remove the item? I'm not sure if I "properly" followed the correct
procedure to remove & replace the drives.....

FWIW, the term "hot-swapping" still refers to the ability to remove a
device and replace it by another without having to re-boot or re-start
the computer. But it is customary to "safely remove" a device before
doing the hot-swap. The purpose of the "safely remove...device" icon
and balloon is to flush the computer's cache, complete the copying of
the files to the removable device and/or to shut it down properly.
Otherwise, strange, lingering results occur. With removable drives,
it can also mean corrupting the entire partition with loss of all files.

For this reason alone, removeable drives should always be set up as
'optimised for removal' whenever possible. This way, written data is not
cached by written to the drive immediately. It can thus be removed without
having to stop it first (as long as the activity light is inactive that is).

Where do I set this from? I can't seem to find it in Computer Management /
Storage / Disk Management.

What about the fact that when I plug in the drive now, it is not seen? Could
I have damaged the USB port? I will try another USB port.

Thanks,
Steve
