External monitor won't display

I have a Toshiba laptop M55 with WinXP Home SP2 . I used to be able to
display on a SamSung 930B 19 in. external, switching back and forth with the
laptop LCD screen via the Function F5 key (cycling "laptop", "external",
"both"). After connecting to a TV set to play a game, I am now no longer
able to display on the external monitor. Using Function/F5 key has no effect
(Laptop OK, but "external only" does not display on external monitor nor the
laptop screen, BOTH will only display on the laptop screen). I checked the
cable and even tried with a new cable but to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try making the connection to TV, turn TV on, then turn on the laptop. I've
found that some laptops must sense the presence of TV at boot time or they
won't connect to it.
