external HD losing share settings after power off

I have a Maxtor 250G external hard drive, formatted as NTFS with 3
partitions. I set it to full sharing (at drive level) for other PCs on home
peer network. Every night I shut down host PC and also power off the Maxtor.
My problem is that every morning I lose the share settings, although all PCs
can see the maxtor drives when sharing is on. Is this normal ? I don't want
to leave PC and Maxtor drive on 24/7, and Maxtor manual recommends switching
it off when not using it for extended periods.

Can anyone pls advise. Thanks.

I just found your message when I was doing a search for info on my
*next* external HD problem.
The problem you describe is a little like my last external hd problem.
What I found was that if I switched on the external drive after
windows had started, sharing would be off. If I switch on the external
drive before starting windows, it returned.
