External hard drive problem

My external hard-drive, attached to my computer via a USB2 cable, keeps
producing the autoplay box with the little torch searching for something or
other and it's driving me crazy.

When I look in the properties section of the external hard drive via Windows
Explorer, there is a "tab" for autoplay. Why on earth does an external
hard-drive have this?

How can I stop the "autoplay" box from constantly coming on?

Thanks in anticipation of someone's help with this matter.

Doubleclick My Computer icon on desktop and then rightclick the external drive
and click Properties. Click AutoPlay tab and under Actions tick "Select
Action to Perform then click "Take No Action", click Apply and OK.

Well on the Autoplay tab, hit the radio button to "Select an action to
perform," then scroll down the list of choices and select "Take no
action."

Repeat for each option listed in the drop-down box at the top of the
tabbed page.

I got Tweak UI (one of MS' powertoys) and it has a section for Autoplay.
I used it to turn off autoplay for every drive letter. No more
autoplay, ever.
