external hard drive help please

I have a sr1417cl compaq computer and Im trying to figure out how to
install a 400 gig simpletech/simpledrive usb 2.0 external hard
drive.Now Its installed on the computer. How do I or can I make the
computer use this space just as it does the internal hard drive
automatically?The internal hard drive is a 120 gig that is 85% full.Do
i need to do something in the start up with F1 and the drive part or

You have to move data to the drive. In general there is no advantage to
installing programs on an external USB drive. Use it for storage of data.

You don't install programs on an external removable hard drive. You put your
backup data on it. Since your internal drive is almost full, start copying
your data to it. Copy, not Move. Then delete the data from the internal
drive.
