External DVD Writer

I have a laptop. I want a DVD burner, but am not clear if the models sold
are internal are external. Some explicitly say "Internal", some don't
mention internal of external. Do they actually make external, and are they
of good quality?
 
Yes, they make external. They will be the same physical drive as an internal,
but in a case with a power supply and a connection to your PC - USB, Firewire,
or both. If your laptop only supports USB 1.1, I'd recommend getting a PCMCIA
USB 2.0 card, too, as the 1.1 spec is pretty slow. Also, be prepared to have
lots of free drive space on the laptop to support the image creation for DVD
burns.
