Export to de-secure

Good Evening,

In the past I have relaxed the security on an Access 97 database by dropping
settings in the workgroup administrator, then configuring the Admin user as
described in the Access Security Bible. Is it also possible to export
tables from a secured Access DB into an unsecured Access DB and not have any
of the
security features transfer to the new database, I seem to recall this as one
method. In this case, there are only 6 tables in the secured backend
database. The new unsecured backend will then be converted to Access 2003
format and linked to a new Access 2003 front-end.

So the real question is, can an Access 97 DB be de-secured by exporting
tables in the secured DB to a new unsecured DB, one that has proper
reference to an unsecured system.mdw file associated with the new Access DB?

Thanks much for your input.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. You can't drop the settings; there is
always some mdw that is set as your default.

Yes it is. By default when you export/import objects, they lose the
permissions set on them.
The new unsecured backend will then be converted
to Access 2003 format and linked to a new Access 2003 front-end.

The usual method to do this is to open the secure 97 mdb, logging in as a
member of the Admins Group. Give full permissions to every object to the
Users Group. Quit Access, and then restart it using the system.mdw
workgroup (no login). Create a new database and import all the objects -
this new mdb is unsecured. You can then convert to 2003 and resecure in it,
if you like.

However, to answer your question, you can accomplish this by exporting.
First open Access using the standard system.mdw workgroup file, and create a
new mdb. Quit Access, and open your secure 97 mdb, logging in as a member
of the Admins Group. Export the objects you want to the mdb you created.

..... actually I just tested this. Although the table will be unsecured, its
owner will show as <unknown> in the new mdb. A final step would be to open
Access (using system.mdw), create a new mdb and import the objects. You
might as well use the 'usual' method described above.
