Export Registry from WinXP, Import to Win98?

T

tk

I'm trying to export a Registry key from WinXP and import it in Win98, but
Win98 gives an error message that the WinXP .reg file is not a valid
Registry file. Is there something I need to massage in the .reg file before
the Import? How about going in the other direction?

Thanks

98 registry files need to have this as the first line (XP will recognise 98 reg filkes)

REGEDIT4

I think they also need to be ansi rather than unicode (save as in notepad)

Not all XP keys exist on 98. XP also uses data that 98 doesn't

In Regedit's Export you can specify 98 format reg files.

You can post your file here if you want someone to look at it.

Win 9x uses the header REGEDIT4 whereas w2k/xp uses Windows Registry
Editor Version 5.00

BE ABSOLUTELY SURE the reg info is compatible with your system or you
may wind up having to perform a scanreg /restore

When doing the export, select "Win9x/NT4 Reg file", in the "Save as type"
field dropdown box. It needs to be an ASCII text file with a REGEDIT 4
header, as David Candy said.

In the export dialog, look in the 'Save as type' at the bottom and use
Win9x/NT4 registry files
which will export in the form Win98 understands. Whether the content
that you export is meaningful in the 98 context is of course another
matter. I would make sure scanregw had just been run to make a registry
backup at the 98 end before importing
