Sometimes I launch an explorer window and it immediately repaints.
Why does this happen? It what I am seeing cached and it needs to get
current information?
Thank you,
Fred Jacobowitz

try cycling your "index" service
to disable for a while.

start > run > services.msc

ok, then enable it.

the index service creates
an index of your file system.
that way the explorer can use
the index.dat file to provide you
with a instant listing.

sometimes, the indexing service
goes crazy and recreates index's
each time you open the explorer,
that is why i initiatly suggested to
cycle it to disable.

so go ahead and try turning it on
for a couple of days and see
if this improves the performance.

I am not running the Indexing Service. Thanks for the suggest.

I have wondered what functions took advantage of the indexing
service. I thought it might be limited to SEARCH. In the MSDN there
are a few references. It is interesting (I believe) that windows
desktop search uses its own indexing system.
I will try it. Thank you,
Fred Jacobowitz

I can't find any information suggesting that explorer uses index.dat
to paint the file list. Have you?
