Folks -

My client has a Dell Optiplex GX400 running XP Pro SP2.
I order to see the contents of multiple cds he has to reboot between each cd.

I have tried the following: reinstall C-ROM, Scan disk for errors, Chkdsk /r
from recovery console, replced CD-ROM. I still get the same result.

Any suggestions?

Are you doing a software eject?

Hit your F5 key to Refresh.

SYMPTOMS
When you view the contents of a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer, you can see the
name of the CD-ROM in the left pane, and the folders are displayed in the
right pane. However, after you remove the CD-ROM and insert a different
CD-ROM, the right pane may still display the folders from the first CD-ROM
even though the left pane correctly displays the name of the new CD-ROM.

CAUSE
This problem can occur if you are using Folder view in Windows Explorer. The
view may not be automatically refreshed in Folder view in Windows Explorer.

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

* Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer.
* Do not use Folder view in Windows Explorer.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For
additional information, click the following article number to view the

Is there a newer service pack than service pack 2 for XP Pro?

I tried the refresh optoin to no avail.

The only way to change what is shown is to reboot.

Tim, I have never had this problem myself.

If neither of these works...

* Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on
the View menu in Windows Explorer.
* Do not use Folder view in Windows Explorer.

Try killing explorer.exe and restarting it instead of rebooting.

To kill explorer and restart it.

Open the Task Manager...
Ctrl + Shift + Escape | Click on the Processes tab | Locate and highlight
explorer.exe | Right click explorer.exe | Click End Process | Click
Yes to the Task Manager Warning that pops up | Click File on the Toolbar |
Click New Task (Run...) | Type in: explorer | Click OK

End Process on explorer.exe will make your Desktop, Taskbar and all programs
disappear. This can be startling. Restarting explorer will bring
everything back.

This can fix/restore/reinitialize/refresh a lot of things.

Tim, I honestly can be of no more help on this problem. KB322389 was all I
had.
